The carbon Iconn Sonic C-6 was renovated for 1999. The changes made include a thinner edge profile and a narrower side cut, which lets the ski ride deeper in the water. It still offers the tournament skier great acceleration with improved deceleration features which create tighter-radius turns and better angle through the wakes. Iconn's new EVA foam bindings are very durable, and they allow the skier much more ankle support than the traditional rubber bindings. The test team's overall impressions of the Sonic C-6 were very favorable. Fast acceleration combined with the ski's ability to ride deep in the water gave the testers a great feeling of stability and security.
Test Team Comments:
Doug: One of the fastest skis tested. Predictable and comfortable. Tweak: make the tip of the fin deeper to help off-side turn rotation.
Rhoni: Fast with great deceleration characteristics. Tweak: bindings back one hole allowed for better rotation at the end of the turn.
Bret: Quick edge-change characteristics. Easy to kill speed in the turn, and it doesn't take a lot of effort from the skier to ride. Tweak: bindings moved back a hole. The stock fin setting was good.
Brandon: Moderate acceleration. Wouldn't allow me to get across the wake quickly enough at my harder line lengths. Shuts down speed in turns very well. Tweak: bindings back one hole.
Todd: Very responsive and predictable. Decelerates great in the turns. Tweak: lowered tip of fin for symmetry on off-side turn.
Specs: Lengths available (in.): 64, 66, 68 Factory fin setting (in.): depth – 2.4; length – 7.0; distance from tail – 1 Price range: $735-$805
