Since 1990 we've watched technology explode. This has been, among other things, a “systems” decade: adjustable performance, hydrophonic dampening, rocker adjustment, flex adjustment, and on and on. It's amazing to think that wakeboards and the accompanying X Generation as we know them have only been around for the past six years. As we roll toward the 21st century, you have to wonder: If we can come this far in less than a full decade, where will we be in 2010?
Trying to make sense of the future is as mind-bending as trying to figure out light years in the Milky Way. Wakeboards and wide skis, sport-V's and water skiing communities – they're a few eras removed from wood planks and iron-ring handles. But we still have two links to the past:
* The family. The '90s family is even willing to pack up the family-specific gear, hitch up the family boat and drive across state borders for a family skiing experience.
* Experimenting. Every time we try a new ski or give the Air Chair a shot or attempt our first wake-to-wake, we're pushing the personal boundaries that separate the possible from the impossible. After 75 years, there's a little bit of Ralph Samuelson in all of us.
