Back Talk

A few words with the slalom gods of the U.S. Pro Water Ski Tour …

How much time do you spend training in the prime of the tournament season?

Jeff Rodgers: Three sets a night after work, four times a week.

Chris Parrish: Two sets a day, four days a week.

Andy Mapple: Coming back from a tournament and having another one in less than one week, I ski about three to four sets if things are going well.

Wade Cox: One to two sets a day, three times a week.

How many different skis do you ride in one season?

Jeff Rodgers: I've skied on the same Goode 9100 for the last three years.

Chris Parrish: One to two skis a year.

Andy Mapple: About five tournament skis and 10 to 12 skis, testing different flex patterns for O'Brien.

Wade Cox: If I'm skiing well,

three skis; skiing badly, seven

to 10 skis.

Do you tweak your fin a lot?

Jeff Rodgers: Not really, but I do recheck my measurements to make sure the fin hasn't moved.

Chris Parrish: No, it's mostly who's riding the ski rather than adjusting the fin constantly.

Andy Mapple: No. I use the

same fin setup year-round, but I have worked on different wing settings. Usually, I end up back at square one.

Wade Cox: Very little.

Who do you train with?

Jeff Rodgers: My brother John, Dray Wannamaker and Bill Stevenson.

Chris Parrish: My dad and Todd Ristorcelli.

Andy Mapple: Scott Wester and Jodi Fisher.

Wade Cox: Rocky Pasqua, Rhoni Barton, Chris Sullivan and Simon Hill.

Impress us with how many back-to-back spinning passes you've done.

Jeff Rodgers: 41-off four times.

Chris Parrish: 39.5-off two times.

Andy Mapple: I've never done spinning passes.

Wade Cox: 39.5-off three times and 38-off 12 times.

Best practice performance?

Jeff Rodgers: 4 at 43-off.

Chris Parrish: 5 at 41-off.

Andy Mapple: 1 at 43-off. I've only tried it a couple of times in practice. Tournaments aren't won at 43-off. I do most of my training at 38-and 39.5-off.

Wade Cox: 2.5 at 43-off.

What is one word that describes your style?

Jeff Rodgers: Unpredictable: No two passes of mine feel alike.

Chris Parrish: Symmetrical.

Andy Mapple: Aggressive.

Wade Cox: Butter.

Injuries sustained while training?

Jeff Rodgers: Multiple ankle surgeries, and I had shoulder surgery the end of last season.

Chris Parrish: Fractured neck, lacerated foot and rotator cuff problems.

Andy Mapple: I fractured my collarbone two times and broke my foot.

Wade Cox: Level one dislocation in my shoulder, fractured pelvic bone and sprained ankles.
