Lucille Borgen of Babson Park, Florida, has been skiing at the U.S. Nationals for so long that she has her own age division. In August she won slalom and trick titles in the first year of Women 9 (85 and older). “When I was 50 I wanted to ski until I was 65,” says Borgen, also the charter member of the Women 7 and 8 divisions. “When I was 65 the goal was 75, then 85. Now I just take it a year at a time.”
Borgen won the first of more than a thousand medals and trophies when she started competitive skiing 35 years ago, while skiing against women half her age. She later petitioned the AWSA to create divisions for older skiers.
“I don't care if I see another trophy, but I shouldn't be skiing against women that much younger.”
On the other hand, Colby Granstrom of Lake Stevens, Washington, has yet to win his first medal in two trips to the Nationals. Of course, he's 78 years younger than Borgen. In 1997, at age 6, Colby was believed to be the youngest competitor ever at Nationals.”He has two more years in Boys 1,” says his dad, Kris Granstrom. “He's looking good for a medal real soon.”
