Free Ski Wakeboarding

We finally 'fessed up in a bold headline in April 1995 to “The Wakeboard Revolution.” There had been hints over the years.

Gregory Penny of Colorado won a Hydroslide photo contest in 1980 for standing up on his kneeboard. In 1985 we ran an ad for the WakeSurfer, “a precision skiing-surfing alternative.” The following year we showed guys wakeboarding in Hawaii, except we weren't really sure what to call it. “Freeboarding, a.k.a., wake boarding, is a real up and comer on the water-sports scene all across America.” By March 1991 we were calling skiboards “the saving grace for water-ski companies as we head into the Nasty Nineties. ”

We were hardly prophetic in April 1992 when we introduced “a composite-molded skiboard (or wakeboard as HO calls it). Whether the board will be a success or not remains to be seen.” The verdict came in practically overnight. A year later we published the first issue of Wake Boarding magazine.
