Weekend Update

Big action worldwide as the Aussies storm the U.S. Open and The Euro Wakeboard Pro Tour hits Spain. Read up on some thoughts from the new U.S. Open champ, super-stoked Josh Sanders.

U.S. Open Wakeboard Championships — Sacramento, CA — June 24-25, 2000

Bell Aqua Lakes hosted the U.S. Open this year, where Australia's Josh Sanders and Emily Copeland (U.S.) came out on top. Sanders shared his feelings on his first pro victory in the U.S. “There's definitely something different about winning than losing [laughing]. I've made the last six finals and my place went up each time. I don't know if I can better myself this time. Maybe if I win the next contest then two firsts in a row would be better than one.” [laughing more]

Sanders and his two Aussie partners in crime, Daniel Watkins and Brett Eisenhauer (“Ike”), all finished in the top five. Sanders said, “Dude, we're in force! Ike's winnin' next weekend. He already told me.” [laughing]

Keep your eye on these rippers at the upcoming events. Watkins is standing tall at third place in the Pro Tour standings, and Ike has the ability to win any contest, armed with the talent to go huge and also pull off technical moves like a Pete 540 and slim chance 540.

2000 Cuervo European Wakeboard Pro Tour — Second Stop – June 24-25

The second tour stop of the 2000 Cuervo European Wakeboard Pro Tour in association with MasterCraft dropped into Benidorm, Spain. Thirty-nine riders took part from all over Europe, including Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and the U.K. as well as the U.S. and South Africa. Competing for the first time in the Tour were Tara Hamilton along with men's pro rider Ryan Wynne (U.S.).

The first day of competition had Cathy Williams (U.S.) and Tara Hamilton battling it out for first place in the Pro Women's class. Williams rode with good overall composition, including both inverts and rotational moves, and took first.

Strong winds on day two resulted in a cancellation of the Pro Men and Intermediate classes. Chief judge Colin Hart commented on the men's heats from day one. “Francois Roy (FRA) excelled himself with his stylish riding, performing a technical but well-rounded run including a very smooth 720, while Ryan Wynne, a very experienced rider from the U.S., rode well, as did Marcello Luca from Italy.”
