The near 70-degree air temperature led me to foolishly decide to skin it. After my second pass, I couldn’t take anymore. “Welcome to Utah, Florida boy,” Mike said, mocking my feeble attempt. As he skied the evening glass, I discovered a higher elevation to capture the scene with my camera. Exhausted from our ski exploits, après ski was quite tame back at the house, but that was OK. My fatigue marked the end of a good day. When we arrived at Goode Ski Lake, Nick’s dad, Mike, greeted us and was all smiles as usual. The Bountiful, Utah, bakery owner was there to join us for a set. With a hip surgery coming up in a couple of weeks, Mike would have his first and last sets of the season. Dave was first on the dock, and with only 1,500 feet of lake to work with from the north to south shore, you’d better be ready to get on it quick. To compensate for the ultrashort setups, the lake hosts an eight-buoy course that allows for a bit more setup time, especially when you enter the course from a 90-degree angle on the lake’s south end.
