What was bigger news: that a 5-year-old tried to outlast barefooters nearly twice his age at the 11th annual installment of the Blairfoot Bonanza? That a 7-year-old stud won the first-ever boom division by hanging on for almost three minutes? Or was it the battle of full-grown brutes when world barefoot slalom champion Keith St. Onge, in his first figure-8 event, went more than three complete figures to knock off endurance veteran David Slemp?
Good stuff, but the most controversial stint surrounded the second-longest run of the tournament, the one belonging to the Blairfooter himself, 83-year-old Banana George Blair, who stayed on his feet for 3 minutes 42 seconds, still half a minute behind senior division winner Frank Ruff. There were some complaints about the fairness of allowing a man with nearly 50 years of barefooting experience in the field.
