Q: I love barefooting. But after leaving the water, my head feels like it's going to explode. Friends tell me to blow out during deepwater starts, which I do. But it doesn't seem to work. Aside from trying a stepoff, what else can I do?

- Ron Burns Grand Island, NE

A: If you're skiing on a boom, a tumble-up is my first choice. Your head is virtually out of the water for the entire start. If you're still getting water in your snout, work on your three-point position. But if you're one of the unfortunate footers with allergies, you should try putting tape across your nose.

Q: We don't have a boom and don't really want to mess with one. Is there anything else I can use from the back of the boat that would be an equally good training tool?

- Darryl Bagley Difficult, TN

A: Nope. Nothing compares with the boom. The second-best tool is shoe skis. Serious barefooters will use both. When you get down to it, a boom is worth every dollar and every bit of time you spend clamping it on. I guarantee you'll thank yourself for doing it.
