Six in the Morning

What's it like to run a clean pass at 39-1/2 off?

Since most of us will never know, we asked one of the world's best skiers to show and tell us the answer.

On a too-early morning in late July, Wade Cox volunteered to perform for staff photographer Heather Lee's camera. There would be no points for almost, no re-rides, no mercy. This was a case of all or nothing. One chance to get all six while the camera recorded every tiny triumph and tribulation.

In less than 20 seconds, it was over. Wade came through like the champion he is, and the only thing left to do was develop the film. We then asked Wade to pick the photos he felt best captured the intricacies of the run. The following pages contain his picks and his commentary.

You may notice that he focused much of his attention on the early stages of the run. “For me, anything technical has to happen between the pull-out and second buoy,” he says. “After that, it's pure instinct, and you just have to play the hand you're dealt.”
