Speed Needs

As in tricks, the key to making moves on the short board is precise speeds. If you're just starting out, I suggest a speed between 17 and 22 mph, depending on your size and weight. Heavier riders will need to move a bit faster. There really isn't a set speed, so choose a speed that is comfortable for you.

When you're learning to jump the wakes, I recommend a short rope (to keep the distance between the wakes small). When you start to progress and lengthen the rope, you should kick your boat speed up a notch. Surface tricks, grabs and 360s should all be done with a speed between 17 and 20 mph. If and when you start trying rolls and flips, bump up your speed. This will help you rotate faster. But remember: Faster speed will lead to harder crashes.
