Stand Your Ground

This is where it all starts. If you want to be a wakeboarder, you have to get the wakeboard stance correct; everything else will follow. The wakeboard stance is a balanced, centered stance with your feet slightly ducked out. Stop for a moment and stand up in your best athletic stance. Look down at your feet. Notice how both of them are slightly pointed outward? That's how you should mount your bindings on your wakeboard.

While many “authorities,” companies, videos and even instructors recommend you start with your back foot at 90 degrees and your front one at 45, we believe water skiers shouldn't do that. That stance is great for an all-out beginner who isn't likely to get up easily. It teaches you how to wakeboard most easily, but it doesn't help you become a wakeboarder. You aren't going to have trouble getting up and riding – where you'll have trouble is breaking your habits of riding with your hips facing forward and keeping all your weight on your back leg.
