If you can stand in the curl, it's time to go mobile and cross the wakes.
Start by getting about 10 feet outside the curl. This distance will allow you space to create momentum and get up and over the wake crest. Begin by pushing your handle in the opposite direction you are going. For example, if you're going from left to right, push the handle to the left. Keep your shoulders and handle level at all times. This will help transfer your body weight over your outside (left) foot; keep about 80 percent of your weight on that foot.
As you begin to drift toward the wake, turn your shoulders and hips into the wake (to the right), keep everything level and remain in the proper barefoot skiing position. To cross in the opposite direction, simply reverse the process.
Brian Fuchs knows wake slalom. He is the reigning world record holder in the event.
