As summer fades into autumn, there are more reasons than ever to light up the water ski lake.

Through November, USA Water Ski has well over 150 tournaments on their schedule. From beginner fun tournaments to world-ranking sanctioned events, there will definitely be a few tournaments in your area that cater to your particular interests. Late-season events are ideal for many skiers. You are likely skiing at your full potential at this time of year, and your season’s top score may be just a few weeks away.
Consequence-Free Skiing
Slalomers are notorious for clinging to structure. After a season (or maybe even a lifetime) of skiing every set in the exact same manner, this fall is the perfect time to mix things up. The most important tournaments are behind you, so you can afford to stray from your typical plan. Try starting at a speed or line length that differs from your norm. Instead of the standard “six-pass set,” see how many consecutive passes you can get through. Dedicate a few sets to your hardest pass, attempting it at a slightly softer speed to see how far down the line you can get. Test out a new style of gate or a different technique you have been pondering for much of the summer. This is the perfect time of year to see if thinking outside the box can progress your skiing to a new level.
New Gear This Year
Most ski manufacturers have their 2010 lineup ready for purchase by mid-August. This means you can get an early jump on setting up your equipment for next spring. The later stage of the season is the best time to test new equipment. You are mentally and physically dialed after a summer on the water, and you are better equipped now to feel out new skis than you will be after a long winter spent off the water. Contact your local pro shop and demo as many new skis as you can.
Call in the Experts
It is very important to plan your fall fitness program sooner rather than later. As your water time will begin to drop with the falling temperatures, the need to find a different avenue to stay in shape will present itself. This does not mean you need to become the consummate gym rat, however. If mirrors and bad music is not your scene, think outdoors. Try biking, running, playing with your kids — whatever. Just keep in mind that you will not get the grueling workout supplied by the hours spent chasing buoys or linking turns behind the boat.
