Q: If I'm involved in an accident while driving my buddy's ski boat, will my insurance cover the claim? Or will I have to rely on his insurance?
Bill Rudersdorf
Chicago, Illinois
A: Most insurance policies do not address the special needs of water skiers; they only provide coverage for the watercraft specifically named in the policy, or one that is newly acquired by the named insured. Make sure you check with your provider.
If you're an AWSA member, however, you're in luck. AWSA and Ski-Safe recently recognized this need and addressed it by a special endorsement. Under the program, coverage is provided while operating your boat or other approved tow boats, so long as permission was granted by the owner. Other conditions and limitations may apply. However, it is considered to be the broadest coverage extension of skiers we know about.
The bottom line, Bill, is to review your coverage, call your agent or get in touch with AWSA (941-324-4341). They will either answer your question or put you in touch with someone who can.
