Cover Yourself

If you're the kind of skier who uses a cover because you don't like a naked boat in your rear view mirror, here are a few tips for long-distance towing.

* Use all the straps. If you're going to tie it down, do it tightly – flopping will cause damage to your boat's gel-coat, windshield frames and some exposed upholstery.

* Cover areas of potential damage with rags, sheets, blankets, etc.

* Use bungee cords between straps to take out the slack that may develop during long hauls.

* Check every strap and bungee cord and tighten accordingly at every gas or rest stop.

* Use tennis balls, cut in half, around straps and ropes that can chafe the hull.

* With inboards, always tow with the cover pole in place behind the engine box. – Harold Page
