We knew it was coming: shorter, flashier, radical-sidecut skis that would redefine the term “wide-body.” We just didn't know it would be so soon.
Right on the heels of the latest wave in wide-body ski design (Equipment, May) come two radical new shapes that thirtysomething performance-minded slalom skiers have been waiting for: HO's Radius Series and Iconn's Power Carv.
Both are designed specifically for skiers who want great performance without the physically demanding characteristics of conventional skis, but who find the shorter, wider skis just a little bit sluggish for their style.
HO's Radius Series consists of three skis to provide the exact support, control and performance: the 1S (for skiers up to 140 pounds), 2S (up to 190 pounds) and 3S (for skiers up to 240 pounds). All three skis, retailing for an estimated $380, feature essentially the same spoon-shaped tip for easy starts, dual inside-radius sidecut for smooth, effortless turns and increased surface area for skiing longer and at slower speeds.
Iconn's offering is a design that Pat Connelly is tabbing the “next generation” in water-sports fun. It's the closest thing to a traditional slalom ski we've seen among wide-bodies, and if early reports are true, it rides like one too – with half the effort. The Power Carv features a super-sidecut shape for easy carving turns, a Trac System tail for solid stability in the turns, an hourglass tip for simple starts, a tapered tail for effortless turn completion and a simple fin adjustment system and toe-adjust binding. The Power Carv ($325-$510) will be offered in 65-, 67- and 69-inch versions.
Early prototypes were making their way around the country at press time, but we expect to ski on production units soon. For more information, contact HO at 800-938-4040 or Iconn at 206-349-1550.
