7 At long last the International Olympic Committee has received the written decision from the Greek Organizing Committee to add water skiing to the Athens Olympic Games in 2004. Water skiing was the only new sport recommended to the IOC, which is expected to take a final vote later this year. 7 Tawn Hahn broke her own seven-year world record in women's tricks by tallying 8,630 points at a tournament in Wilmington, Illinois. Hahn bested her own record of 8,580 points, which she set in July 1992.
7 Slalom sensation Justin Seefried, 15, became the youngest skier to run the 38-off pass during a tournament near his home in Galt, California, the weekend of June 26.
7 All summer we kept our eyes on the kid coming up a few strides behind Seefried, 10-year-old Brian Detrick of Elk Grove, California, as he broke the national Boys 1 slalom record three times. (He capped his binge with three @ 35 in late June.) After his third record-smashing performance, Brian's dad, Steve, found out his boy had been setting new marks with a broken ear drum. He skied the rest of the season with an ear plug and shower cap.
7 The traditional first shovel-full of dirt will be tossed from the site of the new Water Ski Hall of Fame October 1. Doors to the $1.7-million building off I-4 between Tampa and Orlando are expected to open in April of 2001. 7 Rhoni Barton jumped 163 feet at the U.S. Team Trials in Seffner, Florida, on June 30. It's the farthest a woman has ever jumped behind a boat using speed control.
7 Dana Preble, who was sitting fifth on the Wakeboarding World Cup standings, lost any chances of making a run for the title after tearing her ACL at the World Cup event in England.
7 U.S. teams dominated the America's Challenge in Los Morelos, Mexico, July 10-11. The junior squad, 17-21 team, and veteran group won all three team gold medals and 20 of the 24 individual gold medals awarded.
7 Legendary – and recently retired – skier Sammy Duvall celebrated the one-year anniversary of his water-sports center at Disney's Contemporary Resort in Orlando on June 29. The center gave a Zane Shwenk-autographed CWB wakeboard, an HO VTR and other memorabilia to Ty Segaline of Arizona for being its 12,000th guest.
