Is a Bigger Prop Better?

Q: Somebody told me that if I run a bigger propeller, my boat will go faster. Is that true?

A: Yes and no. First, we have to define “bigger propeller.” When you talk about props, you must distinguish between pitch and diameter. Most skiers think the more pitch they run, the faster the boat will go. In some cases, this is true. However, there are many other variables that will influence top speed. Remember too that when you gain top-end speed, you sometimes sacrifice hole-shot.

The diameter of the prop will give you other performance characteristics, but generally not top-end speed (unless you have gross horsepower). The best way to find the right prop for your skiing needs is to try some different pitches, materials or blade configurations. Find a manufacturer or supplier that will exchange or at least guarantee its prop. If a company won't let you do this, you may want to look for someone else. – Mike Walding, Select Products
