Really Big Skis

Is there any end to the oversized jump-ski phenomena? In late 1995, we were shaking our heads over the 80-inch Exocets that Bruce Neville had used to set the world record (a shade over 220 feet). By the start of the 1996 pro tour, the majority of the jumpers in the men's field were trying bigger skis, with the 85-inch KDs under the feet of Carl Roberge being the toppers.

Going into the 1997 season, those same skis will be considered average. At press time Ron and Terry Goodman of Goodman Stiffy Longboards were in the process of making, get this, 96-inch jump skis out of a single mold for men and a pair of 85-inchers for 1996 U.S. Masters women's jump champion Toni Neville.

“They're all carbon, so the skiers shouldn't have any problem with the weight,” says Ron Goodman. As for putting a limit on the length of the dock-sized skis, Goodman says, “As long as the jumpers can handle them, we'll keep finding ways to make them bigger.”
