Training Tools for the 21st Century

Often it's not just the right equipment that gets us ready to ski, train or compete, but what we do after we ski that readies our bodies for the next set. Increasingly, skiers have been turning to aftermarket items to relieve sore backs, reduce swelling in joints and stretch tight shoulders. Here are four aprhs-ski devices that are worth their weight in gold.

Precor Stretch Trainer: By following a set of eight basic stretches that loosen the muscle groups of the back, legs, groin and arms, you'll limber up in no time using this funky machine. A cross between a stationary bike and a resistance machine, the Stretch Trainer will guarantee you a shot of energy because of the increased blood flow. Call 206-486-9292.

Magnetic Therapy: Just recently has magnetic field therapy been accepted in the U.S. – but it's been a staple of Asian medicine for centuries. According to magnetic field therapy's proponents, by setting strategically placed magnets over stressed areas of the body, the ongoing exposure to the magnetism supports the body's self-healing mechanisms by drawing more blood circulation and oxygen to the affected area. In effect, they say the magnetic field excites ions in your bloodstream and facilitates blood supply, which cleanses the affected area. Back on Track: Who hasn't dropped a couple of tennis balls in a sock and rolled them over a sore back after a long day on the lake? Aaron Loft has, and he's devised a neat little device that expands on the roller massage theory. Call 888-575-BACK or try out his Web site at www.backontrack.com.

Hang Ups Inversion Table: Remember the inversion boots fad in the 1980s? Same concept. The muscles of the lower back get the most work on the water, and Hang Ups is just the ticket for relief. Developed by Roger Teeter – a former tournament skier, ski pioneer and 1997 Hall of Fame Award of Distinction winner – the Table offers a reverse stretch that can instantly reduce muscle spasms and tightness.
