Orlando, FL November 2002—The Masters Steering Committee
meets each year after the conclusion of the Masters—the
world's oldest and most prestigious waterski and wakeboard
tournament—to discuss the invitation criteria for the next
year's event. The 44th Masters Waterski and Wakeboard Tournament
and the 2003 Rolex Junior Masters will be held at Callaway in Pine
Mountain, Georgia, over Memorial Day weekend, May 23-25, 2003.
In order to establish criteria for the 2003 event, the Masters
Committee has created a Masters Waterski Ranking List based on
selected qualifying events held in 2002: Charleston Pro Tour,
Big-Air Challenge, the 43rd Masters, U.S. Open, Moomba Masters and
the Malibu Open. Keep in mind this is only a portion of the
criteria used to issue an invitation to the Masters. The qualifying
events will be reviewed annually.
Using a point system based on placement 1st through 10th, where
applicable, for the Slalom and Jump/Ski Fly events, points are
totaled to rank the top ten athletes in each discipline. The top
7 male and the top 7 female athletes on the list will
qualify in that event for the 44th Masters. In case of a
tie for 7th place, the top two scores, based on the point system,
are added together to break the tie. If a tie still exists, the top
score is used to break the tie, after which if a tie still exists
all ties will be invited.
The top 7 in ranking order on the Masters Waterski Ranking List
were: Men Slalom – Chris Parrish, Andy Mapple, Steve
Cockeram, Wade Cox, Drew Ross, Jeff Rodgers and Jamie Beauchesne;
Men Jump – Freddy Krueger, Scot Ellis, Jaret Llewellyn, Jason
Seels, Curtis Sheers, Jesper Cassoe and Ryan Fitts; Women Slalom -
Karen Truelove, Kristi Overton Johnson, April Coble Eller, Emma
Sheers, Jill Knutson, Rhoni Barton and Natalie Hamrick; and Women
Jump – Emma Sheers, Rhoni Barton, Elena Milakova, Lori Krueger,
Britta Llewellyn, Regina Jaquess and Brandi Hunt.
Invitees for the Trick Event will be selected from the top 7
listed on the 2002 IWSF World Ranking Tricks Lists, published as of
March 1, 2003.
“Correct Craft and Callaway, hosts of this event, are very
pleased,” says Larry Meddock, tournament chairman. “The Masters has
always been about quality, not quantity. We are committed to
inviting only the best athletes in the world. Everyone agrees with
that philosophy—however there is dissension sometimes as to
the process used to achieve that lofty goal. This system seems to
be the fairest method that we have used to date; and we are pleased
to release this information so that the affected elite athletes can
begin their planning,” continued Meddock.
