Chris Parrish continued his dominance in men's slalom in 2005 and Andy Mapple skied in his first tournament since retiring last year during the third-annual Diablo Shores Pro Am September 23-25 in Brentwood, California.
In the pro division, Parrish beat out California native Marcus Brown in the head-to-head final round of the three-day event to win his second title in three weeks. WaterSki magazine editor Todd Ristorcelli rebounded from a disappointing showing at the U.S. Open earlier this month to finish third, and Mapple came in fourth, despite not skiing in a tournament in more than a year. Mapple's last tournament was the 2004 MasterCraft Pro.
Pro attendance at the event, which was the was the only professional water skiing event in California this year, suffered a bit because of scheduling conflicts with two other events: a World Cup stop in Enniskillen, Ireland, and the wedding of pro skier Chris Rossi in Utah. Jamie Beauchesne, who has been Parrish's main competition this year, skipped the tournament to attend Rossi's wedding, and skiers like Jodi Fisher and Glenn Campbell opted to compete at the World Cup event. But even with the trimmed-down roster, the tournament offered plenty of excitement. Skiers competed for $25,000 in cash and prizes, and the two-boat, head-to-head format of Sunday's final round yielded a few near upsets and a lot of good-natured banter between skiers.
Jason Paredes came within a missed buoy of beating Parrish during their head-to-head heat early in the final round, and New Yorker Greg Sund surprised more than a few when he ran 39 off for the first time in a tournament and advanced to ski against Mapple in the finals. While the event was a record-capable tournament, many of the skiers involved commented on its laid-back atmosphere and its success as a water-skiing community event. World Water Ski Pros, which sponsored the event, held a raffle to benefit junior development and all the skiers were treated to a barbeque dinner Saturday night.
