Water skiing's next generation of great athletes converged at Sunset Lakes in Groveland, Florida on June 3 and 4 to duke out for titles at the 6th Annual Junior US Open. The budding natural talent made for some intense competition on the water, but the athletes were all smiles as they cheered from the shore. “It's a fun event because there're so many kids between 17 and 21 who haven't made it into the Masters, and this is kind of their in between event,” said tournament host Lelani Travers. “This is really special for them.”

The standout performances in the final round came from Regina Jaquess who swept titles in slalom, tricks, jump and overall for the second year in a row, and  Jonathan Travers, who won the Junior Men's Slalom event with a score of 5 1/2 at 39. Just before he skied the first round on Saturday, Travers mused about the tough competition, speculating that just making the finals in slalom would be a feat in itself. But he was also quick to add that he was going into the first round with a positive attitude. “It's a fun tournament-especially when it's at your house,” he said. “Home field advantage, I guess. It'll be fun to go out there and see what I can do.”

The athletes' awesome performances came as no surprise to those familiar with the well-known site. “This is probably one of my favorite sites to ski at,” said Danielle Shipe, who placed second in Girls Jump and third in Girls Slalom. Junior Men's Tricks winner Kyle Nightengale agreed. “It's a really great site, he said. “The lakes ski really well. It's just a great place to ski.”
