After tumultuous conditions held the scores back on Friday, more forgiving forecasts on Saturday and Sunday yielded impressive results from the best men's slalom skiers in the world at the Wells Fargo Diablo Shores ProAm in Brentwood, California. The final pro tournament of the 2006 season pitted the biggest names in slalom against each other in a head-to-head battle. Masters champ Will Asher drew on his fondness for the format to emerge victorious and bookend the season with his second pro title of the year.
In addition to vying for the last pro title of the year, skiers also seized the opportunity to test out Zero Off, a new GPS speed control system that relies only on input from satellites and the boat's engine management system for in-tolerance pulls. Chris Rossi, who skied to a second place finish with the system, said it harkens back to the days of hand driving. “Instead of the boat being at such a constant speed, it feels like you have a driver working the throttle,” he explained. “You're going to see a new world record set and a lot more 41s run [with the Zero Off system].”
Final round finishes:
1. Will Asher
2. Chris Rossi
3. Jamie Beauchesne
