U.S. Wins Gold At Junior Worlds

The U.S. Junior Water Ski Team won the overall team gold medal and six U.S. water ski athletes earned individual medals in at the 13th Junior Water Ski World Championships Aug. 5-8 in San Gervasio, Italy.

The United States tallied 7,386.38 points at the biennial event. Australia earned the silver medal with 7,002.12 points and France earned the bronze medal with 6,806.42 points.

Skiers and teams from 24 countries competed in the four-day event with the world team title and world individual titles in slalom, tricks, jumping and overall were at stake.

Members of the U.S. Junior Water Ski Team were: Lauren Morgan (Odessa, Florida), Haywood McDonald (Santa Rosa Beach, Florida), Makayla Haw (Rio Linda, California) and Erika Lang (Gilbert, Arizona). Chris Travers (Groveland, Florida), Jody Johnson (Collierville, Tennessee), and Dr. Brad Harmon (Cleburne, Texas) served as coach, captain and physician.

U.S. athletes competing as independents were Steven Brooks (Canyon Lake, California), Brie Carter (Loudon, Tennessee), Brittany Greenwood (Little Rock, Arkansas), Samuel Jackson (Columbus, Indiana), Mason Mechler (Loveland, Ohio), Zane Nicholson (Gallatin, Tennessee), Nikki Waitt (Clermont, Florida), K.C. Wilson (Winter Springs, Florida) and Taylor Woolsey (Montverde, Florida).

Morgan won gold medals in Girls’ slalom (1 buoy at 38 feet off) and jumping (144 feet) and the bronze medal in overall (2,498.83 points). Wilson won the gold medal in Boys’ slalom (2 buoys at 39.5 feet off). Carter, Haw, Lang and Waitt also earned medals. Carter earned the silver medal in Girls’ slalom (5 buoys at 35 feet off); Haw earned the bronze medal in Girls’ jumping (135 feet); Lang earned the silver medal in Girls’ tricks (7,200 points); and Waitt earned the bronze medal in Girls’ slalom (4 buoys at 35 feet off).

France’s Iris Cambray won the gold medal in Girls’ tricks (8,560 points) and overall (2,664.79 points); Australia’s Tim Bradstreet won gold medals in Boys’ tricks (8,690 points), jumping (194 feet) and overall (2,873.49 points).
