Ground-Breaking for Water Ski Hall of Fame

Winter Haven, Florida – October 27, 1999 will mark the date for the official groundbreaking for the Water Ski Hall of Fame/Museum as well as the administrative offices of the American Water Ski Educational Foundation (AWSEF) and USA Water Ski(national governing body of the sport).

The 15,000-square-foot, building, designed by the Architects Design, Inc. of Winter Park, Fla. will be constructed by Everett Whitehead & Son, Inc. of Winter Haven, Fla., is scheduled to open in January 2001.

“I am delighted we have finally reached this stage of the project,” said Carole Lowe, AWSEF director. “It has been a long road. And even though we still have some fund-raising to do, I stay optimistic that with continued effort we will reach our goal.”

For more than 20 years, the organizations have shared a 7,500-square-foot facility on Overlook Drive in Winter Haven, Fla. Over the years, the sport of water skiing has grown, and both organizations are in need of more work space but also more visible facility in which to bring interactive displays to the Museum's impressive collection of water ski equipment.

The new facility will be a major asset to Polk County's tourism industry. The facility's location on Interstate 4 (exit 559) will draw thousands of visitors traveling the busy corridor between two of Florida's top tourist destinations, Tampa and Orlando, off the beaten path and into a different part of the Florida experience.

The American Water Ski Educational Foundation (AWSEF) was founded in 1968 as the not-for-profit parent organization of the Water Ski Hall of Fame and Museum. AWSEF is dedicated to the preservation of the traditions of one of America's most popular family recreational activities and encouragement of and education in the safe enjoyment of water skiing.
