Lake Lure, North Carolina

Over the Smokey Mountains from the honeymoon capital of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, is the kind of backcountry lake that keeps more with North Carolina's unsullied reputation. Sitting barely off the peak of the eastern Continental Divide, Lake Lure ducks the weather that can pound the west side of the mountains and hides from lake seekers at the end of a scribbly network of roads.

“It's like someone took a piece of chalk and drew a line to the west of us and said 'no bad weather on this side,'” says Bob Washburn, water-skiing operator at the Chalet Club.

Though Hollywood producers found Lake Lure years ago, they tactfully kept the name quiet during outdoor scenes from Last of the Mohicans and Dirty Dancing. Good thing, because Lake Lure remains the forgotten cousin among the popular summer retreats in the southeast.
