Flowing along the desert rim of Arizona and Nevada, Lake Mojave is one of the most beautiful oases on the Colorado River system. And it's not a mirage.
Mojave (derived from the Yunan Indian tribal name) is an offspring of Lake Mead to the north. Housed between the Hoover and Davis dams, this pristine body of water draws from the deeper, cooler waters of its sister lake. The end-product is 67 miles of crystal-clear skiing water, which is set apart dramatically by surrounding desert hills, steep canyon walls and rocky cliffs. Much like the Colorado River's days in the Old West era, Mojave still welcomes mountain-dwelling bighorn sheep, jack rabbits and other shoreline animals that aren't intimidated by cutting-edge skiers.
Good thing, because in Cottonwood Cove alone there are dozens of bays and inlets to explore, with a minimum of hazards. Located on the Nevada side of the lake, Cottonwood marks the widest spot on Lake Mojave proper – about 4 miles. With limited road access, Cottonwood Cove remains isolated, especially during winter and spring seasons. Longboarders and wakeboarders have plenty of room to stake their claims.
On opposite ends of the lake lie Katherine Landing (south) and Willow Beach (north), both great spots to drop anchor after a morning set. There's free launching at both areas and marinas, boat rentals and campgrounds. Be aware that the water tends to be cooler around Willow, which is near Hoover Dam.
Whichever nook or cranny you claim on Mojave, you'll be charmed. Its history, awe-inspiring scenery and, most of all, glassy water will make you wonder if, given the chance, Wyatt Earp would have swapped his horse for a MasterCraft. – Shellie Frey
