Turkey Days

So maybe the thought of traveling to Turkey just to water ski hasn't crossed your mind - “Forget Lake Powell, baby, we're going to Turkey!” - but if you're looking to get away, see a little of the world and whet your appetite for morning sets in beatific surroundings, well, Turkey's got the goods.

When we were there, Hillside Beach Club boasted two Malibus and a slew of good equipment to try your hand at (O'Brien, Connelly, HO), and the water conditions would rival that of your own lake. Kalemya Bay is protected on three sides by foothills and cliffs, and although a seafaring vessel or two may cross your vision on occasion, it will only add to the ambience of the experience. Your set will be finished before those rollers coast in.

How do you get there? We flew Delta Airlines from New York to Istanbul and then boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Dalaman. Hillside Beach Club provides bus service for its guests from the airport to the resort, and scheduled bus trips in all three directions provide the link between Fethiye and other cities. The entire trip, including layovers, took 24 hours.

To contact Hillside Beach Club, first try the Internet at www.hillside.com.tr. Or, if you prefer to do it the old fashioned way, their address is Kalemya Koyu, P.K., 123 48300 Fethiye, Mugla Turkey. Phone: 011-90-252-614-83-60; fax: 011-90-252-614-14-70.

Once there, don't miss out on some of the archaeological ruins in Fethiye, Saklikent or Xanthos. Some date back to 500 B.C. And if you have time to visit Istanbul, even during a long layover like we did, it's worth the minor inconvenience to your travel-weary self. Your Hillside representatives can make tour arrangements on your behalf, and it's well worth the somewhat bouncy bus trip.
