The Crownline 202 BR packs a serious skiing attitude into a hull that's 20 feet, 2 inches long and – get this – 102 inches wide. It's no surprise that with this incredible beam, the 202 BR offers plenty of elbow room, a safe ride and seating for 12. What is surprising is that a boat this short and wide skis so well. Our testers rate the Crownline one of the best stern-drives in terms of versatility: The boat offers small slalom wakes, a wide barefoot curl and great boarding launch ramps. That's reason enough to give the boat serious consideration. Yet it's Crownline's unique styling and approach that truly sets it apart.
The 202 BR rides on a deep-vee hull, slightly recessed at the transom. In true Crownline fashion, the hull and deck sides come together cleanly in a rounded, sweeping profile. A curved, five-piece windshield tops off the polished look. Inside, passengers get three seating options for the same price.
Our test boat featured the Super Sport package, and we recommend it for skiing. Skiers can don skis on the big sun pad, or sit on it and help others get into their bindings on the platform. Of course, when the skiing's done, who wouldn't appreciate a big pad to stretch out on and relax tired muscles?
Storage will also be a high point for skiing families. There are plenty of places to keep ski-specific gear out of the way, out of sight and off the floor. The deep bow seats lift out to reveal small wells for vests, ropes and gloves, while the in-floor ski locker holds both narrow and wide-body skis and wakeboards. Inside the padded gunwales there's enough space to tuck away a kneeboard. Plus, areas on either side of the engine will stow bulky gear.
Another of Crownline's ski-specific traits is a wide range of power options. Both MerCruiser and Volvo Penta engines are available. For the most punch, we'd recommend the Volvo Penta 5.7 GSI DP – the Duoprop drive will pop skiers right out of the water and reduce the bowrise inherent with lower-horsepower engines.
Whatever power you choose will deliver consistent wakes. We were pleasantly surprised with the low slalom wakes at all line lengths (longline through 22 off). Skiers cutting it up between 24 and 30 mph will find good conditions. Wakeboarding rates high too; small to medium ramps give a nice kick.
You can't argue with this kind of versatility. Combined with extensive interior room, the 202 BR is a first-rate skiing stern-drive. – Rob May
