WATERSKI MagazineThe 200 Plus is a boat for skiers who want it both ways. It's based on a tournament-certified closed-bow hull, and still offers true eight-passenger seating potential, along with the comfort of a recreational runabout.
Sound too good to be true? It might be if the builder were less qualified or experienced. Drawing from a vast knowledge of inboard boat design, Mike Brendel knew what to keep and what to change when designing the 200 Plus.
The windshield and dash stayed forward. This not only maintained the original hull's critical center of gravity, but also ensured maximum cockpit space and allowed for a full-width, two-passenger observer's seat.
Rather than a walk-through passageway, Brendel opted for “walk over” access to the bow. This, in turn, maximized console storage space and created a lighter yet stronger bow section.
Multi-density foam seats with rolled-edge seat bolsters were specified for maximum support and passenger comfort. Brendel's signature rear trunk was added, and the angled rear seat was fitted with a removable center section for improved platform access. Like other MB models, the 200 Plus features the downturned exhaust system that gives rear passengers an extra 6 inches of legroom.
MB Sports is known for using premium materials and top-quality hardware, and the 200 Plus is no exception. The lay-up includes a layer of Hydro-Pel resin, a special barrier coat material that's 300 percent more flexible than standard polyester resin. This material eliminates print-through of woven fibers and also provides superior blister resistance and absorbs impacts that might otherwise cause cracks and punctures in conventional composites.
Interior and mechanical systems are created with an equivalent eye to detail and quality. The engine box rests in a recessed lip, which deflects and dampens engine sound. Underwater running gear is hand-fitted for perfect alignment and hand-tuned to minimize vibration and parasitic drag.
Both our dry-land inspections and on-water evaluations support Brendel's claim. The 200 Plus really does combine the best of both a high-end tournament boat and an open-water recreational craft.
