Meanwhile, inboard builders are scrambling to move power plants back to boost top speeds and create uncluttered cockpits.
Both groups hope to meet in the middle, which is exactly where Tigi has already landed with its 1999 2100V Limited. This innovative sport tow boat combines the safety and efficiency of an inboard drive not only with the open design of a rear-engine I/O, but also with the ability to trim the boat's running attitude for maximum performance.
To create the 2100V, the Tigi design team started with a new hull designed specifically for a rear engine, shaft-driven prop and a separate rudder. Key to this new boat's performance would be Tigi's TAPS technology, a patented trim system which allows a shaft-driven inboard hull to change its running angle with the touch of a button.
Mating a hull trim system to an inboard not only improves the ride in open water, but also allows the driver to fine-tune the wakes to suit the person at the other end of the tow rope, whether he's skiing, wakeboarding, kneeboarding or trying other air-intensive disciplines.
As the designers hoped, the 2100V proved to be not only an exceptional wakeboard boat, but also a surprisingly good slalom machine and a user-friendly recreational tow boat. To capitalize on the 2100V's towing versatility, the cockpit is fitted with a two-position ski pylon, which raises to a height of 6 feet to provide maximum boarding lift.
When the skiing action is done, the 2100V can impersonate a luxury cruiser. With the removable Corian table in place, the wraparound cockpit seats filled with friends, and the acoustically engineered sound system playing some favorite tunes, this boat takes on the appearance of a floating lounge.
While others search for the perfect combination of room, ride and skiing versatility, 2100V owners can relax in the knowledge that they have already found the best way to mix skiing and boating fun.
