The ProStar 205V is the most versatile water-sports boat in the MasterCraft lineup. It's a V-drive with the same hull as MasterCraft's first wakeboarding boat, the original X-Star, so it can satisfy the riders in the family. Yet it has the styling and ski pylon associated with the ski-oriented ProStar line. Basically, this model will provide a fun day on the lake no matter what you want to tow, be it a hydrofoil, tube, kneeboard or your bare feet.
All this resourcefulness comes packed in a relatively small package, at least by the company's current standards. At 90 inches, the beam is the smallest that MasterCraft offers, while the length of 20 feet, 7 inches is the shortest of the V-drives. Still, there's space for passengers in the open bow, wraparound seating and three-piece sun deck – while storage compartments are tucked underneath. New for 2004 are touches of black and metallic styling in the driver's console for that refined look of a ProStar.
Skiing
This is one of the few V-drives that drive and ski more like a direct-drive. Right around 24 mph is the point of transition, where the wakes start to dissipate and appeal to open-water skiers. Beyond that point, beginning and intermediate swervers will get the most out these wakes, which are especially narrow thanks to the 205V's 90-inch beam.
Wakeboarding
These wakes have more potential to cover the gamut from novices to experts with well-defined swells. But to realize that potential, try the boat with the optional ballast system, or just give in and go all-out with the X-2, which is a ProStar 205V with the full wakeboarding package.
