OVERVIEW
It pains us to see families wasting weekends in an I/O runabout when there's the Sunscape 21 LSV. As the 211¼2-footer in Malibu's Luxury Sport V series, it has a posh interior married to a performance engine and hull for unbeatable cruising. Fill up the 60-quart ice chest, stuff the rear 30-cubic-foot trunks with your water-sports gear, pile the kids into the open bow and wraparound lounge, and you're ready to go.
With our 340-horsepower test engine, the hole shot was remarkably fast with minimal bow rise. Sound is kept to a minimum, too, with Malibu's sound suppression material applied to the extremely solid fiberglass construction. Tracking with Gorilla fins and responsiveness are both great for a boat of this size.
As if that weren't enough, the wakes from the V25 Diamond hull work well for both skiers and wakeboarders. Why not spend your weekend with the Sunscape 21 LSV? Good question.
SKIING
Even with the expansive hull modifications, the
21 LSV has retained its respectable crossover performance. At skiing speeds, these wakes will appear somewhat soft to anyone used to an I/O or just interested in free skiing. We recommend casual skiing at slow speeds behind this luxury ride.
WAKEBOARDING
This boat has the chops to create a legitimate wakeboarding wake, but you need to add on the appropriate tools to get the job done. Wake inducers like the Malibu Launch System and the Wedge produce pro-level wakes with excellent shape. Without the extras you get respectable intermediate wake performance.
LOWDOWN
• For 2005, this model has the V25 Diamond hull, 6 inches longer and 5 inches wider than last year's boat.
• Adjustable rudder allows drivers to customize the way the boat tracks.
• Luxury appointments include hand-wrapped vinyl dash, chromed accents, plush carpeting and thick 38-ounce vinyl.
• Optional tower, ballast and Wedge hydrofoil can enhance the wakeboarding performance.
