OVERVIEW
Every year or so, a mold-breaking boat comes along that causes us to do a double or triple take. This year, that boat is the 24V Sport Deck. It's the latest progression in an industry that once had mainly direct-drive ski boats, then V-drive wakeboard boats, then supersized V-drive family cruisers. Now comes this V-drive deck boat.
The Sport Deck is a unique hybrid of a tow boat and a pontoon. The interior is spacious, with passenger seating stretching out across the 101-inch beam for much of the 24-foot length. In particular, the open bow couldn't be much bigger. There's also a stepladder there and at the swim platform for easy boarding from the dock and water. The walk-through transom makes for plenty of family-friendly room to get around. And with a head, sink and cavernous basement, this 24V Sport Deck doesn't just feel like a deck boat, it feels like a houseboat.
SKIING
When it comes to skiing, you might think that the 24V Sport Deck has two strikes against it: namely the deck boat width and the V-drive wakes. But at 15 off going 30 and 32 mph, we found respectable ski wakes for a boat this size, with a flat table, though there were troughs on both sides. Still, it had strong responsiveness and impressive tracking.
WAKEBOARDING
These wakes had decent shape, with smooth transitions, but they lacked the girth you would expect out of a boat this size. Beginning riders will have fun learning behind the 24V Sport Deck, but those with more experience will advance quickly beyond these wakes.
LOWDOWN
• While it's remarkably spacious, the 24V Sport Deck still handles like a champ.
• Multisport towing performance much better than a traditional I/O deck boat.
• Getting on is easy, thanks to two stepladders, and walking around is easy, thanks to the transom passageway.
• Equipped with a head and sink, this boat is ready for a full day on the water.
