OVERVIEW
The Moomba Outback will draw you into the boat dealership; then the Outback LS will get you to open the wallet just a little wider. Bow to stern, the LS is a step up the Moomba ladder, with a couple more inches in length, a covered clamshell motor box standard and a lockable in-floor storage compartment under the bow walk-through. It can also accommodate a tank under the rear bench seat as part of the optional ballast system.
Other than that, the LS model has everything people love about the Outback: hand-laid fiberglass construction protected by a limited lifetime warranty, direct-drive handling, versatile water-sports performance, side and rear storage compartments for wakeboards and skis, easy-to-read gauges, a comfortable interior and more. If you're set on buying an inboard and you want room for the family without breaking the bank, the Outback LS should be tops on your “I have to test-drive this” list.
SKIING
For much of the skiing population, these wakes will suit them just fine. Recreational skiers with an interest in the slalom course will have a great time at 15 off going 32 mph. The usual 22-off bump is there, but you can advance all the way up to 32 off without encountering too much resistance.
WAKEBOARDING
Some wakeboarding wakes can be downright scary with their immensity. These aren't. Instead, they're very comfortable for weekenders looking for consistent, easy-to-learn-on wakes that just aren't available on I/Os. Once everyone in the family has gotten the hang of riding, it's easy to add a tower and ballast to up the thrill factor.
LOWDOWN
• This next step up from the Outback model offers extra touches throughout, including an in-floor ski locker.
• Still a terrific entry-level inboard for families looking to enhance their water-sports fun.
• Styling changes for 2005 touch up the look, from a new sun pad pattern to less topstitching.
• Big gauges now include depth finder and tach with LCD hour meter.
