OVERVIEW
Sanger thought it had found the sweet spot in the boat-buying market when it introduced this 21-foot-plus V-drive for 2004, but the company didn't realize how sweet. Keeping up with demand last year for the V215 was tough, so Sanger instituted production changes to make more boats available in 2005.
Why the sudden popularity? Part of it is the size — comfortably spacious without being oversized. Part of it is the impeccable handling — a 96-inch-wide beam with a running surface almost identical to the V210's 90-inch beam because of Sanger's exclusive radius V-bottom. Its high-speed maneuvering ranked among the best in its class. While the V215 is still a fairly new boat, it exemplifies Sanger's old-school construction methods of hand-laminated wood/glass composite hulls and traditional boat designs without 3-D computer imaging. It's the definition of instant classic.
SKIING
Tracking is true, with nimble responsiveness and a consistent pull. The wakes may be understandably harder than what you'd get from a direct-drive, but recreational skiers who casually cut across won't even notice.
WAKEBOARDING
The full Wake Series package adds a standard tower, special graphics and triple ballast tanks with 900 pounds total capacity. With our team's extra test ballast we boosted the wakes to intermediate-to-advanced size, though it slightly cut into the get-up-and-go driving performance. The wakes have rampy transitions with pop, no curl at the peaks and plenty of room in the landing zones.
LOWDOWN
• Sanger is building more of these in-demand V215s for 2005.
• Free of the wakeboarding ballast, it handles like the narrower, nimbler V210 thanks to a tight running surface.
• Driver gets terrific visibility with no need for a bolster, easy-to-read gauges, cup holder and tray.
• Wake Series package outfits the V215 for wakeboarding.
