OVERVIEW
Sanger has stretched out the best of its other V-drives to create this family cruiser with wakeboarding flavor, the V230. The big feature here is the big size: a 22-foot-7 centerline and 100-inch beam. Seating and storage are both in full force, with a capacity for 13 passengers and enough space under gas-assisted hatches to stow everybody's gear. The three biggest compartments — under the observer's seat and alongside the engine — can all accommodate skis, boards, almost anything.
Sanger hasn't overlooked the small details, though. Grab rails are readily available in the front and back, and they're long and recessed in the cockpit. The driver gets a special tray and cup holder, along with comfortable throttle positioning. A roomy walk-through to the open bow is one of the widest we've encountered. Overall, the fit and finish are excellent. Outside of water sports, the cruising itself is fun, with a 30-degree V entry and vibration-dampening wood-composite construction.
SKIING
We usually don't expect much out of a V-drive this big when it comes to skiing performance. Yet when we took a set at 30 and 32 mph with a line length of 15 off, the skiing was impressive for this class of boat. Wakes weren't super big, the bump was somewhat flat — a great recreational ski boat.
WAKEBOARDING
The V230's wake shape is close to perfect. With a super-mellow peak, you can edge aggressively. The rampy, smooth transition boots you good. The big landing zone feels soft, great for wake-to-wake moves. With a wakeboarder in tow this boat tracks and maintains speed with the best of them.
LOWDOWN
• The V230 is Sanger's big, beefy V-drive for families.
