BOAT REVIEW

Fresh out of the dealer’s showroom, the Moomba Mobius LS has a lot to offer, which may be especially surprising to stern-drive owners expecting an entry-level boat to be stripped down. For buyers who want to stick close to the sub-$34,000 base price, they can do just that. Most important, this and all Moombas come standard with an excellent engine, the Indmar Assault, a 325-horsepower EFI workhorse. Of course, there’s also hand-laid fiberglass construction, a hull designed specifically for water sports, and a deck that strives for maximum legroom and storage space. With a rear ballast bag and tower included, it’s perfect for families looking to wakeboard, ski and more.

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
We hear about “warring” families all the time —– the parents only want to ski, while the kids only want to wakeboard. The Mobius LS is designed to keep the peace with its exceptional crossover capabilities, while it also allows families to stay within their budgets. The stock ballast of 400 pounds and the tower are ready to generate good wakes and a high tow point for kids eager to ride high —– but not too high. That’s great for younger families. All skiers have to do is empty that ballast and cruise up to skiing speed (we’ve hit 30 mph in just 5.1 seconds), and the wakes mellow out for recreational skiing and runs through the slalom course. The hull was just redesigned for the ‘06 model year, so it represents Moomba’s latest thinking in wake shaping.

The direct-drive configuration means the weight of the boat is centered so it handles very well, whether tracking on a straight line or turning on a dime.
