BOAT REVIEW
Ski Supreme, as the brand’s name implies, has a long history of notable water-ski performance. This 220SP, the only direct-drive in the company’s line, lives up to that name with all that buyers would expect from a traditional ski boat. Yet in a savvy acknowledgement that water sports are much more than just skiing, the available Sky package of upgrades outfits this ski boat as a nimble crossover performer. Either way, passengers benefit from the deep feel of the interior, which offers a secure ride, as well as the dual-access transom storage compartment, the cooler under the rear bench and the cup holders on the back of the engine box.
PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
The 220SP has mass appeal in part because of the design of its hull. It’s 90 inches wide–a rarity given today’s trend toward 100-inch-plus beams–so the wake is already minimized for skiing. That and the balanced center-mounted engine make it easy for recreational skiers to swerve across the wakes. For more serious skiers, taking the 220SP through the slalom course reveals that wakes stay soft all the way into shortline at advanced speeds.
Outfitted with the wakeboarding-oriented Sky package and running at riding speeds, the 220SP has the ballast to further improve the wakes. As the lip becomes nicely defined, the wakes aren’t too far apart, so riders up to intermediate levels will like making wake-to-wake moves over the ideal table.
Whatever this boat does, it can even take on chop and double-ups with a deep-V entry that tapers to a semi-V bottom. And it always looks good, with fresh graphics. The creativity shows that Supreme has deep roots in the West Coast’s tradition of cool, custom boat exteriors.
