Tigé 22i 2008

BOAT REVIEW

The Tige 22i direct-drive boat is always fun to test-drive, not just for the versatile wakes and experimenting with the TAPS2 settings to dial in customized wake shapes. It’s also fun to simply hang out in the 22i thanks to its unique seating configuration. Tigé has carved out the usual rear trunk to make room for extra seating and increased legroom from the bench to the engine box. Designers have tucked extra seats everywhere, from the corners to the back of the engine. The storage is unique, too, tucked under everything and running along the gunwales. Overall, it nicely blends the wakeboarding-style interior with the direct-drive ski-style handling.

BEST FEATURES

Rear-facing Seats
Practically all the seats in the 22i face backward, and the multitude of seats means passengers can balance their human ballast well.

Transom Step
There are steps going through the middle of the back seating to allow easy access to the platform without having to mess up the upholstery.

TEST ANALYSIS

Wakes
We tested the 22i with no ballast since Tigé promotes the advantages of using only its ConvexV hull and TAPS2. Sometimes the 22i wakes seemed just as good as those of the 22Vé, a V-drive. Spaced out a little wider than we expected, the wake was pretty well shaped, if a little on the mellow side. Overall: Even with no factory ballast, the 22i threw out a good, consistent wake suitable for beginner and intermediate riders.

Handling
Bow rise: 18.2 degrees during typical acceleration. There were no obstructions on acceleration with the 22i. Tracking: Not as worthy of a slalom course as the more ski-specific 20i, of course, but this longer, wider direct-drive and its three tracking fins still out- performs most V-drives. Turns: Solid with no surprises.

Acceleration
With 340 hp upgraded engine (315 standard) and Acme 13×10.5 four-blade prop.

Vibration
Recorded with driver and passenger turning through a double-up at the sport-specific speed.
