The slalom course is the exact same size for everyone, so the goal is to create space or time to give yourself more options in each turn. The more swing and the more power you get in the turn, the more time, space and options you have at the end of the turn, which will get you through the course more efficiently. Swing is all about giving yourself options, and here’s how I achieve the most efficient swing possible. — Will Asher, Malibu Boats skier
Power Through The Wakes
One of the keys to giving yourself a good angle into your swing is to power through the wakes. The Malibu Response TXi has such small, soft, low-impact wakes that it’s easy to power through them. The effects of spray and foam can be quite jarring as well, so good swing will never happen without unobtrusive wakes.
Accelerate Through The Turn
The more angle, direction and speed you have coming off the second wake the more time it gives you to start your turn early, so you can be finishing your turn when you reach the buoy. The buoy is a lot like the apex of racing turn — you want to accelerate the whole way through it.
Commit
Being committed through the wakes and off the wake is crucial. Don’t think of anything except getting to the buoy as fast as possible. If you’re hitting an obstacle going through the wake, you get pulled off your edge, lose your position and immediately lose all the momentum you had going toward the buoy. Then it’s already too late.
Get An Advantage
The TXi’s hull is just clean, simple and effective. There are no gimmicks necessary to compensate for a lack of performance. Even if I’m in the boat by myself, I don’t run a counterweight in the passenger side because the hull is balanced well enough and the wakes are so small that it doesn’t need it.
Track True
The way the TXi tracks makes a big difference in how effective your swing is. Swaying from side to side in the course can put you off your edge and make you late for your swing, so it’s important to have a rock solid pull every time.
